Cleaning up a hacked website without losing the map

A Woodbridge, Virginia chimney company's site had been hacked with injected casino posts. The cleanup removed the spam from Google's results and rebuilt the city pages, while the business kept first place on the Maps grid for its main terms.

The Google Maps grid today

Local Dominator scan for "chimney sweep woodbridge va". This was the first grid scan for this keyword, so there is no before map. It shows the business held the top 3 on 92% of the grid while the site was being cleaned up. Green pins are top 3, yellow 4 to 6, orange 7 to 10, red 11 to 20, grey outside the top 20. The starting point

The site had been hacked: hundreds of casino posts had been injected and were ranking in Google, with gambling searches making up about 23,600 impressions over 12 months.

The June audit also found the homepage canonical pointing at a redirect, seven redirect loops, and 18 city pages that were about 80% copies of each other.

What we did

  1. Removed the injected posts

About 405 gambling URLs now return 404; Search Console shows no manual action and no security issue.

  2. Fixed the homepage and redirects

The homepage is now self-canonical and all seven redirect loops are gone.

  3. Rewrote the city pages

18 city pages rewritten to 78% to 92% unique text and 1,170 to 2,100 words each.

  4. Removed fake rating markup from the homepage

A hardcoded 5.0 rating was taken out of the homepage schema.

  5. Submitted a disavow file

Spam backlinks from the hack were disavowed on July 29, 2026.

  6. Ran the first map scan

Seven keywords on a 133-pin grid as a baseline for every future report.

What's still open

This one isn't finished, and we say so. Search clicks are down 35% year on year, partly because spam impressions disappeared and partly because Woodbridge head terms slipped in regular results. New spam backlink waves grew referring domains from 351 to 951, 15 empty gambling tag pages still need removing, and the old rating markup is still on 14 service pages. The map pack held throughout: the business leads all five chimney terms on the grid.

How this was measured

Screaming Frog crawl of 2,162 URLs, Search Console (July 7 to October 6, 2026 vs the same weeks of 2025), Ahrefs and a Local Dominator grid of 7 keywords and 133 pins on October 8, 2026. June had no map scan, so the map figure has no before.
