Service area business Google rules for contractors

Quick answer

The service area business Google rules cover businesses that go to customers instead of serving them at their address, like most plumbers, roofers and movers. Google asks you to hide your address, list up to 20 service areas, and keep them within about two hours' drive of your base. You still rank strongest near your real location.

Key takeaways

  • If customers don't come to you, remove the address from your profile.
  • You can list up to 20 cities or ZIP codes, within about two hours' drive.
  • Service areas tell customers where you go. They don't make you rank everywhere on the list.

What counts as a service area business on Google

Google defines a service-area business as one that visits or delivers to customers but doesn't serve them at its address (Google Business Profile Help: Manage your service area). Most trades fit: plumbing, HVAC, roofing, garage doors, chimney service, moving.

A hybrid business does both. To count as a storefront, Google says you need permanent on-site signage. A showroom with a sign and staff during posted hours is a storefront. A home office or a shop where customers never come is not. Getting this right is one of the first checks in our local SEO services.

The service area business Google rules that matter

From Google's service area page and its Business Profile guidelines, as of October 2026:

  • Hide the address if customers don't come to you. Google's example is a plumber running the business from home, who should remove that address from the profile.
  • One profile for the whole area. A service-area business without a staffed storefront gets one profile, not one per town.
  • Up to 20 service areas, set by city, ZIP code or other area. A radius around your address is no longer accepted.
  • About two hours' driving time from your base is the outer limit for the overall area.
  • No virtual offices or P.O. boxes. A rented mailing address you don't work from isn't eligible. A co-working desk only counts with clear signage, staff during business hours and customers coming in.
  • Edits take time. Approved service area changes can take up to 48 hours to show.

What service areas do and don't do for rankings

This is where most owners are surprised. Listing 20 towns tells customers where you'll travel. It doesn't make Google rank you in all 20. Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors (Google Business Profile Help), and nothing on Google's service area page says that listing a town makes you rank there.

As a worked example: a roofer working from a home in one suburb lists eight surrounding cities. On a geo-grid scan, the business ranks well within a few miles of home and fades toward the far cities, even though they're all on the list. That pattern is normal. To reach further, you need relevance and prominence in those towns, not more names on the list.

Our Vancouver, Washington roofing case shows what's possible and what's left. Fifteen weeks of Business Profile work took grid points outside the top 20 from 59% to 0%, yet the northern areas, Hazel Dell and Minnehaha, still rank 8th to 16th.

How to rank in the towns further out

  1. Build a real page for each priority town. Our rule: no two location pages may share more than half their main text, and each needs at least 3 genuinely local details, like neighborhoods you work in, local housing types or permit notes. See location pages SEO.
  2. Ask customers in those towns for reviews. Reviews that mention the job and the town read naturally and help customers there trust you.
  3. Get listed and mentioned locally. Chambers of commerce, local suppliers and community sponsorships in the towns you want.
  4. Measure each town on the grid. We scan the same grid every month at the same time, so we can see whether a town page moved its area.

If you have a showroom too

Some home service businesses run both ways: a garage door company with a showroom, a fireplace and chimney company with a retail floor, an HVAC company with a parts counter. Google calls these hybrid businesses.

According to Google's service area page, a hybrid business can:

  • Show its storefront address, as long as there's permanent signage and customers are served there.
  • Set hours for when staff are available to customers at that address.
  • Add a service area for the places it travels to.

Google is clear on the direction of the switch. If you serve customers at your address and also have a service area, enter both. If you don't serve customers at your address, remove it and enter only the service area. Removing every service area is only possible for a storefront business with its address on the profile.

As a worked example, a garage door company with a staffed showroom and a sign out front would keep its address visible, list showroom hours, and add the towns its trucks cover. If the same company closed the showroom and kept the yard only for trucks, it would hide the address and keep the service area. Either way, the website's contact page and schema should say the same thing.

Mistakes that get service area profiles in trouble

  • Showing a home address because it was entered at sign-up and never hidden.
  • Creating a profile for each town at a friend's house, a mailbox store or a virtual office. Google's guidelines say those locations aren't eligible.
  • Listing a whole state or areas far past two hours' drive.
  • Changing business type back and forth while testing. Approved changes can take up to 48 hours to show, so quick switches make the results impossible to read.

Questions about service area business google

Can a service area business rank in the Google 3 pack?

Yes. Hiding your address doesn't stop you ranking. You'll usually rank strongest near the location you verified and need location pages, reviews and local links to compete further out.

How many service areas can I add on Google?

Google allows up to 20 service areas, set by city, postal code or other area, and the overall area should stay within about two hours' drive of your base.

Can I open a second profile for another city?

Only if you have a real, staffed location with signage there. A virtual office, mailbox or co-working desk without signage and staff isn't eligible.
