Local citations and NAP consistency: what actually matters

Quick answer

Local citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone number on other websites, like Apple Maps, Yelp or a chamber directory. They help Google confirm you're a real business in a real place. What matters now is accuracy on the main sites and mentions on trusted local lists, not hundreds of directories.

Key takeaways

  • A citation is any mention of your name, address and phone, with or without a link.
  • Mismatched details on major sites confuse Google and customers.
  • Being named on trusted local "best of" lists now counts for more than another directory.

What local citations are

There are two kinds of local citations:

  • Structured citations: business listings in a fixed format, like Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, the Better Business Bureau, trade directories and your chamber of commerce.
  • Unstructured citations: mentions in normal writing, like a local news story, a supplier's "where to buy" page or a "best roofers in town" list.

Both help Google trust that your business is real, active and where it says it is. They're one of the prominence signals our local SEO services clean up in the first month.

NAP consistency: why one wrong digit matters

NAP stands for name, address and phone. When those details differ across sites, an old phone number on Yelp or "Suite 200" on one site and "#200" on another, Google has to guess which version is right, and customers may call a dead number.

It goes beyond directories. On one St. Paul moving company's site, a plugin setting had emptied the business address in the website's own structured data on every page, and the ZIP code didn't match the Business Profile. Fixing that came before any new content, and the mover's suburb rankings climbed afterwards, including "local movers roseville" from an average position of 96.5 to 1.1.

Which listings to fix first

  1. Your Google Business Profile. Every other listing should match it exactly.
  2. Your own website. Footer, contact page and structured data.
  3. The big platforms: Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook and Yelp.
  4. Trade and local sources: your trade association, suppliers, the chamber of commerce and the BBB.
  5. Old and duplicate listings: anything with a former address, phone or business name.

For a Vancouver, Washington roofer, updating listings with matching details and real project photos was part of the Business Profile work that took it from missing the top 20 on 59% of its map to ranking on every point.

What's changed: lists and mentions

In Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors 2026 report, experts ranked being named on curated "best of" lists, and the quality of unstructured mentions, among the most important factors, especially for visibility in AI search tools. Another 200 low-quality directory listings won't do that.

So once the main listings are accurate, the better use of time is getting mentioned where locals actually look: local news, community sites, supplier pages and genuine "best of" roundups.

Questions about local citations

How many local citations do I need?

There's no magic number. Get the main platforms and the sources specific to your trade and town accurate first. After that, quality mentions beat more listings.

Should I pay for a citation-building package?

Only if it fixes and manages the important listings. Packages that submit you to hundreds of low-quality directories add little and can create more inconsistent data to clean up later.

I moved. What should I update first?

Your Business Profile, your website and the big platforms, then search for your old address and phone number to find the listings that still show them.
