Google Business Profile verification: every method explained

Quick answer

Google Business Profile verification is how Google confirms you're allowed to manage a business profile. Until you verify, you can't reply to reviews, and your profile is less likely to show in local results. Google picks your methods: phone or text, email, video recording, live video call or postcard. Reviews usually take up to 5 business days.

Key takeaways

  • You don't choose the verification method. Google offers the ones your business qualifies for.
  • Don't edit your name, address or category while a postcard code is on its way.
  • Service-area businesses verifying by video need to show tools, a work location and proof they run the business.

What Google Business Profile verification is

Verification is Google checking that the person claiming a Business Profile really owns or manages that business. Google's own ranking tips list it first, because it tells Google you're authorized to represent the business, so the profile is more likely to show up in search results. You also can't reply to reviews until you've verified (Google Business Profile Help).

When we run a free audit for our local SEO services, verification and ownership are the first things we check. A profile that's unverified, or verified under a former employee's or an old agency's email, has to be sorted out before any other work counts. Our rule is simple: the business owns its accounts, and we're added as a manager.

The five verification methods

According to Google's verification help page, as of October 2026 the methods are:

  • Phone or text: you get a code by call or text and enter it on your profile. Automated phone menus can't receive the code, so use a line a person answers.
  • Email: Google sends the steps to an address shown on the verification screen. You need access to that exact address.
  • Video recording: you film a short, unedited video of your business. Google recommends this method when you're eligible.
  • Live video call: a Google support person guides you through showing your location and that you manage the business. It isn't available to every business.
  • Postcard: Google mails a code to your business address. Not every business is offered it.

Google decides which of these you see, based on things like business type, region, public information and business hours, and the page says the methods "can't be changed". Some businesses have to complete more than one.

Video verification for service-area businesses

Most contractors, roofers, movers and HVAC companies work at the customer's home, so video is the method they're most often offered. Google's video recording rules ask service-area businesses to show three things: where the business operates, the professional tools or equipment used for the work, and proof that you manage or represent the business, such as filming yourself doing a service or opening branded assets. The video must be at least 30 seconds, one continuous unedited take, and recorded live in the app.

Here's an example plan for a roofing company, not a client story:

  1. Start outside on the street sign and building number at the business address.
  2. Walk to the truck and show the business name painted or wrapped on it.
  3. Open the truck or trailer with your own key and show ladders, a nail gun and shingle bundles.
  4. Show something only the owner has, like the business license on the office wall or the shop door opening with your key.

Keep it simple and steady. Walk slowly, keep the camera on what you're showing, and say what you're filming as you go. Practice once without recording. If the video is rejected, Google says it will share the reasons and you can submit a new one.

How long Google Business Profile verification takes

  • Postcard: usually arrives within 14 days. The code expires after 30 days.
  • Review after you finish the steps: up to 5 business days, occasionally longer. This applies to video too.
  • Live video call: only during your listed business hours.
  • Instant: some businesses can verify straight away through Google Search Console or bulk verification.

All of this is from Google's verification page. If the "Get verified" button comes back after you've finished, Google couldn't fully verify the business, and you should try again or pick another method.

Mistakes that delay or break verification

  • Editing the profile while a postcard is coming. Changing the name, address or category makes the code fail.
  • Requesting a second postcard. A new code cancels the old one and restarts the wait.
  • Using a call center or phone menu number. The code can't get through an automated system.
  • Using an address you can't use. Google's profile guidelines say P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes aren't acceptable and virtual offices aren't eligible. If you work from home and travel to customers, verify the home address and hide it.
  • Adding extra words to the name. The guidelines say the name should match your real-world name, and unnecessary information can lead to suspension.
  • Letting someone else own it. If an agency or web designer verifies under their own account, you can lose access when you part ways.

When you'll need to verify again

Verification isn't always once and done. Google's editing help says moving to a new address means you must verify again, and changing your business name may require it. Adding or editing categories can also trigger a new check. Plan big edits for a quiet week, and make them one at a time.

Once you're verified, the real work starts. Our guide to Google Business Profile optimization covers what to fill in next, and how to get into the Google 3 pack covers how ranking works. For one Vancouver, Washington roofer, fifteen weeks of Business Profile work, with no website rebuild, took its share of the map in the top 3 from 13% to 33%.

Questions about google business profile verification

Can I choose postcard verification instead of video?

No. Google decides which methods your business is offered and you can't change them. If you're offered video, Google recommends using it.

I work from home. Will my address be public after verification?

Not if you set up as a service-area business and hide the address. Google's guidelines say service-area businesses should hide their address from customers.

My verification is still pending after a week. What should I do?

Google says reviews take up to 5 business days and occasionally longer. Avoid editing the profile while you wait, and if the Get verified button returns, try again or use another method.
