Non-branded Google clicks up 95%, average position from 39 to 11

A Minneapolis and St. Paul garage door company had lost most of its search traffic. A root-cause investigation, then cleanup and off-page work, took its non-branded clicks from 84 to 164 for the same three months year over year, and leads from Google now convert 63% better. Its map rankings didn't improve, and this page shows that too.

The starting point

Organic traffic had fallen sharply year over year. A year before this comparison, the site's average Google position was 37.6, and searches without the company name brought 84 clicks in three months.

The investigation, using Search Console, GA4 and Semrush, found several URLs competing for each location, page-builder and tracking-parameter URLs indexed by Google, a backlink profile where most anchors were money keywords from spam domains, and a site-wide redirect that sent every broken link to the homepage and hid them.

What we did

  1. Found why traffic fell

A root-cause report for the owner that ranked the causes: competing URLs per location, indexed junk URLs, toxic backlinks and the gap to the market leader's authority.

  2. Checked every blog post for duplicates

Slug-level duplicate checks across the blog, so each post targets one search.

  3. Exposed hidden broken links

Identified the catch-all redirect masking broken links, so they could be fixed instead of hidden.

  4. Built the keyword map

A content plan and keyword map from Semrush exports, BrightLocal grid scans and the Business Profile's own search terms, suburb first.

  5. Off-page plan

15 link targets, three digital PR campaigns and outreach templates, with sponsored local media links checked live before recommending them.

  6. Checked the lead paths

Both ways a visitor can become a lead, the scheduling widget and the estimate form, mapped and tested.

What's still open

The map pack didn't improve. On BrightLocal's weekly grid for "garage door repair" around one office, the average map rank was 18 in September 2025 and 20.4 in October 2026, against competitors with 180 to 930 reviews. Google organic visits in GA4 were also lower (1,167 against 1,761) even as Search Console clicks rose, so we report leads and conversion rate, not visits. The map pack is the next priority.

How this was measured

Search Console web search, July 25 to October 24 in 2026 and in 2025; non-branded means searches that don't contain the company name. GA4 Google organic sessions and key events for the same windows; 3,583 Yahoo-labelled organic sessions in 2025 were left out as unreliable. Semrush organic traffic estimate. BrightLocal weekly Local Search Grid since September 15, 2025. Work delivered with a partner agency.
